The QICPPP.org website is funded by the Queensland Government's LPITAF Scheme and was developed by researchers at Bond University with the assistance of Carers Queensland and an Expert Reference Group.

The website is designed to make it easier for people with impaired competence, their families and carers to find information to assist them in making informed decisions when planning for the future.

A 'carer' is defined as someone who provides unpaid support and assistance to a person whose competence has been impaired. Carers are not limited to a person's parents or partners; they can also include children and extended members of family and friends.

'Impaired competence' and 'impaired capacity' are legal terms which are used to refer to the ability of a person to make legal decisions about their money, property and care in the future.

It is possible for anyone to lose their 'competency' or 'capacity' to make these important legal decisions.

The factors that may affect a person's competency to make them include:

  • Developmental disability
  • Acquired brain injury
  • Dementia
  • Chronic mental illness
  • The information in this website is also useful for the lawyers who may wish to advise you. You should let the lawyer giving you advice know about this website. It might help them to assist you with the issues that are really important to you, or to find the best planning tool for your particular situation.

It is important to talk to a lawyer about the future needs of the person you support. In this way you can be assured you are undertaking legally-binding and informed decisions in the person's best interests.

We have divided the information in this website into 5 sections:

    1. Why do I need to plan for the future?

    2. What are the legal issues that a person, their families, carers and lawyers need to know?

    3. What are the non-legal issues that a person, their families, carers and lawyers need to know?

    4. Where can a person, their families and carers go for legal advice?

    5. Where can I go for additional information?
